JUNIOR ENGINEER
Job Vacancy (1 position based in Beijing)

Background

The China Sustainable Transportation Center (CSTC) is a non-profit research organization funded and supported by The Energy Foundation and The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. CSTC promotes the development of sustainable transportation systems in Chinese cities. Our main objective is to create information exchange between international experts discussing the advanced transportation planning theories and research methodologies from around the world, catering these discussions to the specific needs of China as well. Through this platform we can promote the sustainable development for China’s urban transportation systems. Currently, CSTC is cooperating with The Energy Foundation’s efforts to promote the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) developments in China by providing technical support and the international experts who help in the new practices and developments.

Position

The China Sustainable Transportation Center (CSTC) is looking for a responsible, energetic, and professional individual for the position of Junior Engineer. 
The successful candidate will be expected to begin work in March 2007 and will be evaluated at the end of a 3-month trial period.

Main Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Executive Director and Senior Engineer, the Junior Engineer will:

  • Work with the Senior Engineer to support local urban transportation experts on BRT network planning in cities such as Beijing, Jinan, Kunming, Chengdu, and Dalian, etc. including the design of BRT corridors.
  • Assist with the designing of BRT corridors in each city with the cooperation of international and domestic consultants.
  • Assist the consultants in summarizing international experiences on transportation systems, especially BRT system development.
  • Organize workshops and training sessions for China’s cities, including bringing in international consultants as needed.
  • Accompany international consultants on travel tours to domestic cities.
  • Accompany Chinese officials and others engaged in BRT projects on travel tours to international “best transportation policy practices” sites.
  • Develop papers and reports to promote sustainable transportation concept in China.

 
Skills and Qualifications

  • At least one year experience (Work or Lab experiences) in the field of transportation system development, planning and design, and possess at least a master’s degree or equivalent in Transportation Engineering, Urban Planning or related disciplines.
  • Strong understanding of the dynamics of urban transportation development in China; experience dealing with technical and political issues within the transportation sector.
  • Fluency in English and Mandarin with the ability to translate and draft documents in both languages, oral communication is a plus.
  • Solid computer knowledge, including in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, AutoCAD, and transportation engineering software.
  • Work well under pressure, both independently and as a team member, and be a creative problem-solver.
  • An ability to demonstrate at all times an energetic, “can do,” cordial, and professional demeanor and attitude.
  • An ability to be flexible, responsive, and timely.
  • Be willing to travel within China and internationally to accomplish the tasks listed above.
  • Have good interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
