Abstract:Lack of humanity consideration and emphasis on car traffic efficiency in traditional arterial road designing has caused improper selection of pedestrian crossing facilities resulting in inconvenience and risks to pedestrians. This paper first reviews related research on pedestrian crossing facilities and performs comparative analyses of various pedestrian crossing facilities across several arterials in different cities. Results indicate that there lack sufficient designs of arterial pedestrian crossing facilities in China as well as central safety islands. A stated preference (SP) survey is designed to obtain preferences of pedestrians to various types of arterial crossing facilities among three age groups including teenagers, adults, and elderly. Public willingness combined with arterial crossing behavior analysis and accident statistics, this study proposes guidelines and requirements for selection of urban arterial crossing facilities under different environment conditions. The paper further investigates the requirements of setting grade-separated crossing facilities and central safety islands. It is also emphasized that "harmless pedestrian crossing" instead of car traffic efficiency and pedestrian degree of freedom should become the foremost standard for selection of urban arterial crossing facilities.
