Abstract: To understand the unique characteristics of transportation facility planning for supersized park area, this paper analyzes the characteristics of visitor flow within supersized park area. The paper points out there are significant seasonal variations in visitor volumes and most popular travel mode to the park is personal vehicles, which imposes a big impact on the surrounding traffic flow. This paper presents case studies on the park operation and transportation facilities in Beijing Xiangshan Park and Yosemite National Park in the U.S. Taking Shanghai Gucun Park as an example, the paper elaborates the transportation facility planning in several aspects: visitor flow forecasting, auxiliary facility planning for bus, temporary parking space, P&R parking lot, non-motorized traffic parking lot and emergency evacuation plan for peak visitor time periods. Finally, the paper proposes strategies for transportation facility planning in supersized park area, which should comprehensively consider resource sharing, hierarchical security, intensification and etc.
