Abstract: To enhance the connecting efficiency and promote efficient integration between railway stations with urban transportation system, this paper conducts a field investigation and data analysis of more than 10 typical large railway passenger stations. The five major connection characteristics of large-scale railway passenger stations and urban transportation are discussed, including complementary development, urban rail transit oriented connection, three-dimensional layout of passenger station, balanced passenger arrival and departure time, and comprehensive commerce development inside the station. The paper further analyzes the problems of railway passenger stations such as lack of integration with urban functions, inconvenient connection with cities and ineffective interconnection among railway passenger stations. By discussing the future development trend and demand on integrating railway passenger stations and cities, the paper proposes the critical path in six aspects of integration: layout, network, facilities, operation, development, and administration management. These strategies are elaborated with the examples of Beijing South Railway Station and Shenzhen North Railway Station.
