Discussion on Equity in Accessibility: Moving from Disparity to Insufficiency Analyses

Abstract: A literature review of selected articles from international academic journals is presented to summarize research findings, theoretical approaches, and empirical analysis of urban transportation. The aim is to enhance the communication between industrial and academic fields, highlight international research focuses, and promote academic exchange in urban transportation. The selected paper in this issue concentrates on transportation equity and accessibility. This paper thoroughly examines and questions the traditional methods employed in transportation equity. Previous studies often relied on the average accessibility of groups, thereby concealing the heterogeneity within these groups. They only compared the differences in accessibility levels among different groups without delving into whether the accessibility is sufficient—i. e., whether the accessibility levels are adequate to support the participation of people in various daily activities. To address these issues, a new analytical approach is proposed—the analysis of accessibility deficiency, which can address the aforementioned issues by establishing a clear threshold for sufficient accessibility. Through empirical research conducted on 49 major urban areas in the United States, the study demonstrates the limitations of traditional disparity analysis and presents instances of transportation inequity through sufficiency analysis.
