The China Sustainable Transportation Center (CSTC) is a non-profits organization registered in Chaoyang District, Beijing. CSTC is funded by The Energy Foundation China Sustainable Energy Program (CSEP) under its China Sustainable Cities Program(CSCP). CSTC was set up to provide specific technical assistances to the local activities in promoting sustainable urban development and sustainable urban transportation systems. CSTC helps build local capacity for sustainable development through bridging international best practice and knowledge into the field.
We are seeking a responsible, energetic, and highly professional individual fluent in Mandarin and English, with a background in urban transportation system planning and in-China government policy experience to help us conduct technical support to local practice in developing sustainable urban transportation system. The individual would be hired as Engineer, based in the CSTC office in Beijing.
Responsibilities:
Under the direction of Directors and Senior Engineers , the Engineer will:
- Work with the CSCP team to deliver technical support to local urban transportation experts on bus rapid transit (BRT) network planning in cities, including the design of BRT corridors;
- Participate in the planning and designing of public transit systems that prioritize public transit in each city, cooperating with international and domestic consultants;
- Participate in the optimization of urban transportation system, including planning and design of non-motorized modes (NMM), private transportation demand management, traffic control, and other transportation-related engineering tasks;
- Work with the CSCP team to help consultants summarize and confer international best practices on transportation systems planning to local teams;
- Help to monitor and supervise the progress of CSCP grants at local level;
- Help to organize workshops and trainings for China’s cities, bringing in international consultants as needed;
- Accompany international consultants on to work with local cities throughout China;
- Help to write technical papers and reports promoting sustainable transportation in China.
Skills and Qualifications:
- At least one year of experience (professional or lab) in the field of transportation system development, planning and design;
- Master’s degree or equivalent in transportation engineering, or related discipline;
- Thorough understanding of the dynamics of urban transportation development in China; experience dealing with technical and political issues within the transportation sector;
- Fluency in English and Mandarin, with the ability to translate and draft documents in both languages; strong oral communication is a plus;
- Solid computer proficiency, including in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, AutoCAD, and transportation engineering software;
- Ability to work well under pressure, both independently and as a team member, and to be a creative problem-solver;
- Ability to demonstrate at all times an energetic, “can do,” cordial, and professional demeanor and attitude;
- Ability to be flexible, responsive, and timely;
- Willingness to travel within China and internationally to accomplish the tasks listed above.
